Best Frank Peretti Books
Reading By Candlelight
Have you ever read a book that you just can't seem to put down? One that keeps you on the edge of your seat page after page? Well my friends, the books that I have listed below by Frank Peretti will do just that!
At the beginning of March, we had some heavy snowfall, ice and freezing rain that blanketed our area. The weight of the ice on the tree branches caused them to start snapping and fall to the ground, bringing power lines down in the process. Inevitably, this caused our electricity to go out for three days. No lights, no heat, no television, and wait for it... no internet! Bum, bum, BUMMM! I just had to find some other way to entertain myself.
So, after wandering around trying to find something to do, I came upon our bookshelf. We have a plethora of books up on those shelves, so at first it was a little overwhelming. As my eyes gazed across each book, reading title after title, I stopped on Frank Peretti's "This Present Darkness". I purchased this book years ago on my mother's recommendation, but never picked it up to read it. So I thought that I would give it a try now.
After putting my daughter down for the night, I snuggled up on the couch with about three blankets and started to read my book by candlelight. It started out to just help pass the time and to help forget, for a brief moment in time, that our power was out. It became so much more than that though. I was enamored by this book! I found it so hard to put down, even though I was getting blurry-eyed from sleepiness. With my head nodding up and down, fighting my need for sleep, I kept reading page after page. I just wanted to know what was going to happen next. Needless to say, I eventually fell asleep on the couch while reading.
I finished reading "This Present Darkness" in five days and I couldn't wait to start the next book, "Piercing the Darkness". Thankfully I had that one on my bookshelf as well, so I started reading it right away and it was even better than the first book! I got up two hours early everyday so I could read before my daughter woke up and I read during each of her naps. I was able to finish reading this book in three days, and frankly, I'm sad that I'm finished. I just didn't want it to end.

This Present Darkness
The 1st novel in the duo
There are evil and demonic spirits descending onto a small town called Ashton. "This Present Darkness" is an account of the spiritual warfare and constant struggle between good and evil that this town endures. The vivid descriptions that Frank Peretti gives of the battle between the angelic and demonic forces is absolutely breathtaking and helps to make this book come alive.
"This Present Darkness" has a gripping, well thought out plot and interesting characters. It is riveting and soul touching and will leave you on the edge of your seat. I will be completely honest with everyone though... this novel does become a little slow towards the middle, but I promise you that the story does pick back up. Just hang in there and you'll be so pleased that you finished it! I'm so glad that I kept reading because it was such an amazing and thrilling book that lead to an even more intense sequel.
Piercing the Darkness
The successful follow-up
I was captivated as soon as I started reading this book. It begins by putting you smack dab in the middle of an action packed situation that leaves you on the edge of your seat. Through the course of the book you will learn about the main character, Sally Beth Roe, and what lead her to be in the situation that she is in. Frank Peretti reintroduces certain characters from This Present Darkness, which helps to tie the two novels together.
I enjoyed the depiction of the angels and the demons and how each side is fighting for the soul of Sally Roe. The emotional roller coaster that she goes through is just so wonderful to witness!
Piercing the Darkness is based on a true story of an elementary school that was being sued for teaching the children to meditate, visualize, and contact spirit guides in the classroom. This book elaborates on that story and played a huge role in the spiritual journey of Sally Roe.
I found myself constantly thinking about this book throughout the day and wondering what was going to happen next. This novel grabs your attention from the very beginning and doesn't let you go until the last word. It is brilliant, memorable, and exquisitely written.
This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness are well written, inspiring, and thought provoking novels that tell of the constant spiritual warfare that goes on right in front of us. There are angels and demons fighting over our own souls at this very moment.
Frank Peretti has an incredible gift for writing and it especially shows in these 2 novels. I wholeheartedly recommend these novels because there are times in our lives where our faith can be shaken and tested and these books help to put that into perspective. This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness both helped to reinforce my belief in the power of prayer.
